The five largest memory chip makers generated a combined free cash flow of over $90 billion last quarter, a 92-fold increase year-over-year, driven by an AI boom and rising memory prices. Their combined net profit grew 16-fold, while the 'big four' US tech giants saw only a 1.5-fold rise.
The five largest memory suppliers—Samsung, SK hynix, Micron, Kioxia, and Sandisk—collectively generated a free cash flow exceeding $90 billion last quarter, up 92 times year-on-year. Their combined net profit increased 16 times, controlling about 90% of the global market. In comparison, the 'big four' tech companies (Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta) had net profits only 1.5 times higher. The surge was largely due to a 50-60% rise in memory prices. The makers plan to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in expanding capacity over several years. Sandisk has not yet reported quarterly results, so Nikkei used estimates. A successful IPO of Chinese CXMT indicates strong investor interest in memory makers. Meanwhile, some US tech giants are seeing negative cash flow as they spend more than they earn.
