Google Experiment: Route Coordination Reduces Congestion and Emissions in Cities
Google Research conducted the first large-scale real-world study of route coordination in navigation apps. Changing the Google Maps algorithm in 10 US cities, redirecting less than 2% of trips, led to a 2% increase in traffic speed on targeted segments and a 0.5–1.0% reduction in fuel consumption, potentially cutting thousands of tonnes of CO₂e per year per city.
