Young Scientists Present 32 AI Projects at Fifth Summer School in Ust-Labinsk

The fifth summer school on artificial intelligence for young scientists, titled 'Summer with AIRI', concluded in Ust-Labinsk, Krasnodar region. It was organized by the AIRI Institute and the Volnoye Delo foundation with support from Sber and Avito, and took place at the first university lyceum named after N.I. Lobachevsky. 84 young researchers from Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Saint Petersburg, Voronezh, Krasnodar, Sevastopol, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, and Saratov worked with 63 scientists and mentors from AIRI, MSU, HSE University, Skoltech, Central University, MTUCI, ITMO, MIPT, and other research organizations and universities, as well as partner company Avito. At the end of the training, participants conducted research experiments and presented 32 projects on AI, covering key areas in computer science including AI applications in medicine, robotics, life sciences, weather study, transport, and materials science. Teams worked on materials design for electrochemistry, detecting pathologies in medical images, large language models for architecture and construction generation, as well as agent systems and safe and efficient AI. The best evaluation from the scientific commission went to a project by a team of students from Skoltech, HSE, and ITMO on controlling the behavior of hybrid language models, studying ways to change their behavior such as switching response language, communication style, or willingness to respond without retraining the model. Such work helps better understand how hybrid systems work and makes their configuration simpler, faster, and more accurate. Ivan Oseledets, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, General Director of AIRI and Dean of the Faculty of AI at MSU, expressed gratitude to Oleg Deripaska and his team for hospitality and support of young talents. Participants also had the opportunity to meet potential scientific supervisors and attend career consultations with Sber experts. Maxim Eremenko, Vice President and Director of the AI and Machine Learning Development Department at Sberbank, noted that leading Sber experts presented current trends in AI applications in cybersecurity, materials science, construction, and model quantization, combining lectures with career consultations. Avito specialists also shared their expertise; Andrey Rybintsev, Managing Director for AI at Avito, said they are glad to collaborate with the AIRI summer school for the second year in a row, offering students practical tasks and knowledge in areas such as search query and results matching technologies, computer vision, as well as lectures on large language models and data science engineer skills, plus a workshop and public talk on career topics. The event previously took place in Sirius, Innopolis, Saint Petersburg, and Tomsk.
