Why the Rumor of a Meta Cloud Sinks the Neoclouds

Bloomberg reported on July 1, 2026, that Meta is preparing a cloud computing business to sell AI computing power and access to its hosted models. The project, internally named 'Meta Compute', would put Meta in direct competition with AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Meta has neither confirmed nor denied the report. The news triggered a market reaction: Meta's stock rose 8.8%, while CoreWeave lost 13.9% and Nebius 17% in the same session. The initiative is reportedly led by Meta's infrastructure chief Santosh Janardhan, Daniel Gross of Meta Superintelligence Labs, and president Dina Powell McCormick. Two service models are under study: selling raw GPU capacity and providing access to hosted models like Muse Spark. Meta has significantly increased its capex forecast to $125-145 billion for 2026, and has signed multi-billion-dollar contracts with CoreWeave and Nebius for leased infrastructure. However, analysts note that Meta may not have the right to resell capacity leased from CoreWeave. The trend of monetizing surplus compute capacity is not unique, as SpaceX and xAI have already opened their Colossus data center to external clients.
