US Government Bans Roombas and Other Robots

The US government announced a ban on advanced robotic devices, initially thought to target humanoid robots, but the FCC confirmed it also applies to robot vacuum cleaners. The ban covers any new software-controlled robot that travels over ground, weighs over 4.4 pounds, perceives its environment, and has wireless connectivity. Existing robots are unaffected, and companies can still import approved models, but future foreign robots require US manufacturing commitments. The ban is justified by national security concerns, citing poor security in some robovacs like DJI. Most robot vacuum brands, including top brands Roborock, Ecovacs, Dreame, Xiaomi, and Narwal, are Chinese, and even the Roomba brand is now owned by a Chinese company. US-based companies like Matic may need waivers if they don't source 65% of components from the US. The FCC is not targeting security practices but origin and manufacturing location.
