Time Magazine has begun displaying advertising on its website that is only visible to AI crawlers like ClaudeBot, OAI-SearchBot, or PerplexityBot. The ads are embedded in a Markdown version of the site and aim to influence AI chatbot responses, with the first campaigns from Ally Bank and the Project Management Institute.
Time Magazine has started showing ads only to AI crawlers like ClaudeBot, OAI-SearchBot, or PerplexityBot, discovered by freelance developer Vincent Schmalbach. The ads, for example from Ally Bank, are embedded in the Markdown version of the site and are written like an FAQ with 'facts' about the bank, similar to potential user queries to AI assistants. As reported by Digiday, these are among the first publisher campaigns specifically targeting AI agents. Google bots and regular users see the HTML version without the ads, while AI bots get the Markdown version with the ads. The hope is that AI systems will adopt the content unfiltered in their answers. Jonah Goodhart, CEO of the agency Mobian, explains that influencing ChatGPT could have a massive impact, more than any single campaign. Time places the ads primarily in evergreen content such as the 'Best Inventions of 2025' list and a 'Top 100 Content Creators' article. First advertisers are Ally Bank and the Project Management Institute. According to Cloudflare data, over 50 percent of all internet traffic is now non-human, with 52 percent of crawler requests in June 2026 serving AI training. A Similarweb study shows that the share of Google searches with AI Overviews has risen from 15 to nearly 45 percent within a year.
