Screen-time apps often fail because they rely on willpower, but Autonomous Key takes a physical approach: it's an NFC key paired with a companion app to lock distracting apps. To regain access, users must physically scan the key, and each unlock session lasts up to 60 minutes before apps lock again. Leaving the key in another room or at the office turns mindless impulses into deliberate actions. Priced at $9, it's cheaper than rivals like Blok ($29), Unpluq ($26.50), and Brick ($59), though Brick offers extra features like Sleep Mode and in-app purchase blocking. The key is compact, about 3 inches long, and supports Android 8.0+ and iOS 15+. The companion app provides AI-powered insights, tracking unlock frequency, duration, and times of day, with a deliberately sassy personality that offers sarcastic suggestions. There are no subscriptions or premium tiers, and one key can pair with multiple phones. During testing, NFC scans occasionally required multiple attempts, so it may not suit essential apps like messaging or email.
