The Tokenpocalypse Is Here: Companies Scramble to Cut AI Spending

A leaked Accenture meeting reveals that non-engineers are driving token consumption, with PDF-to-markdown conversion being a major cost. Companies are scrambling to reduce AI spending as token costs soar.
A leaked audio recording from an Accenture meeting, reported by 404 Media, highlights that non-engineers, not engineers, are driving token consumption in AI usage. Accenture's agentic AI strategy lead, Justice Kwak, noted that internal data shows non-engineers engage in behaviors that consume many tokens, such as converting PDFs into images and then into markdown files. Stuart Henderson, Accenture's client group lead, joked about this practice, calling it one of the big token chewers, to which Kwak confirmed that Accenture's own data supports this. The anecdote underscores broader efforts by companies to reduce AI-related spending as token costs become a concern.
