Teletubbies Robot Offers Home Cleaning Service at $30 per Hour, Purely 'Manual' Intelligence

Tau Robotics, a US robotics startup founded in 2024 with less than 10 employees, has introduced a humanoid robot cleaning service. The robot, which resembles a Teletubbies character due to a Wi-Fi router on its head, can perform tasks like washing hands, mopping floors, and throwing away trash. However, all the showcased demos are actually teleoperated, meaning the robot is controlled remotely by a human operator. The service costs $30 per hour, which is cheaper than a typical human cleaner in the US. The company has three robot 'employees': Chelsea, Elon, and Tony, each specializing in different areas. Despite the initial disappointment, the author acknowledges that teleoperation is a clever approach to collect data and overcome the current limitations of embodied AI, similar to the shadow mode in autonomous driving. This strategy is also used by other companies like 1X Neo, though that product has not yet been widely delivered. The debate continues on whether humanoid form is necessary for home tasks, with arguments for easier teleoperation and emotional value. Tau Robotics is currently offering the service by invitation only in San Francisco.
