Reddit's CEO Steve Huffman criticized Google's AI Overviews, claiming they haven't delivered the same positive impact as traditional search results. This comes as Reddit considers ending its licensing deal with Google and as studies show AI Overviews reduce referrals to publishers.
During Reddit's quarterly earnings report, CEO Steve Huffman voiced concerns about Google's AI Overviews feature, which automatically summarizes search results. In an investor letter, he emphasized that Reddit offers authentic human perspectives, contrasting with AI-generated summaries. He noted that while traditional '10 blue links' have driven value to the ecosystem, AI Overviews have yet to show similar positive impact. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Reddit is considering ending its lucrative $60 million licensing deal with Google, and other publishers like The Economist, Reuters, Politico, and USA Today are also considering cutting ties. A Pew Research study found that AI Overviews reduce referrals to such sites by nearly half compared to traditional results.
