Over the weekend, users discovered that some Anthropic Claude chats could be found via web search, including queries about political party advice, attorney ethics, and erotic role play. The chats were shared via public URLs, which search engines indexed. Anthropic's robots.txt has blocked crawlers from shared chats since September 2025, but missing 'noindex' tags on the pages allowed indexing. Google states it ignores robots.txt if a page is linked elsewhere and lacks 'noindex' tags. A WIRED review confirmed the pages lacked 'noindex' tags. Google spokesperson Ned Adriance said site owners control indexing. Anthropic did not respond. The same issue occurred in September 2025. Currently, the chats no longer appear in Google but still show in Bing (about 612 results). The pages still lack 'noindex' tags, making re-indexing possible.
