OpenAI announced updates to ChatGPT models for users on different tiers. Starting next week, the main model on the Free tier and Go subscription will be GPT-5.6 Luna, described as the fastest and cheapest model in the family. Free users will have unlimited text queries, while limits on file uploads, images, and other tools remain. Plus and Pro subscribers will get an updated GPT-5.6 Sol with two modes: fast responses and deeper reasoning, controlled by a slider in the interface. Higher reasoning levels target planning, research, writing, programming, and other complex tasks. OpenAI claims factual errors have decreased by 62% for GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% for GPT-5.6 Sol compared to previous models, though testing methodology is undisclosed. A Think button will be added to free and standard tiers, allowing Luna to spend more time on complex questions. Additionally, OpenAI enhanced safety measures for users under 18, including avoidance of romantic interactions, age-restricted content, and topics like eating disorders, dangerous actions, and violence, along with dedicated safety tests and recommendations to seek support from trusted people.
