NVIDIA's 800 VDC Power Architecture: A New Standard for AI Compute Efficiency

NVIDIA, Google, and Microsoft have co-developed an 800 VDC power distribution architecture to address the inefficiencies of traditional AC power delivery in AI data centers. This standard, published through the Open Compute Project, reduces conversion stages and improves efficiency, with over 80 companies already building compatible products. NVIDIA's DSX reference designs and new power rack, expected in late 2026, provide a hybrid path for existing facilities to upgrade without overhauling their electrical infrastructure.
NVIDIA, along with Google and Microsoft, has developed an 800 VDC (direct current) power distribution architecture to meet the increasing power demands of next-generation AI compute. Traditional AC power delivery requires multiple conversions, leading to inefficiencies at high rack densities. The 800 VDC standard, published jointly via the Open Compute Project (OCP) in a white paper and the LVDC Solid-State Transformer Specification, simplifies power delivery by reducing conversion stages. More than 80 equipment manufacturers are building products to this specification, and NVIDIA's DSX reference designs provide a blueprint for AI factories to transition from AC to hybrid and fully native 800 VDC facilities. For existing data centers, NVIDIA's MGX-compatible 800 VDC power rack, available in the second half of 2026, offers a hybrid architecture that can slot into current AC infrastructure, delivering 800 VDC to compute racks without electrical system changes. The roadmap includes a row power center supporting up to 2 megawatts per row by 2027, and a DC power block for new facilities. Wood Mackenzie projects $9 trillion in global AI and data infrastructure investment through 2040, making power architecture critical for absorbing this investment.
