Anthropic has officially announced plans to design its own AI chips, creating a new department for this purpose. The company will maintain a multi-chip approach, continuing to use chips from suppliers like Google, AWS, Nvidia, and AMD.
Anthropic is now officially developing its own AI chips and has set up a new department for chip design, with corresponding job postings already published. The company had previously been in the news for deals with Google to acquire chips totaling several gigawatts, as well as partnerships with AWS, Nvidia, and AMD. Anthropic is not the first AI firm to build its own chips; Google and Meta already do so, and OpenAI introduced its first chip, Jalapeño, in June. Samsung is suspected to be the production partner for Anthropic's chips. However, Anthropic does not plan to abandon third-party chips, aiming instead for a multi-chip approach, as a spokesperson told Business Insider.
