Moscow starts testing fully driverless Lastochka train with remote operator
The Russian Railways research institute NIIAS has begun testing the Lastochka electric train with a fourth-level automation driverless system on the Moscow Central Circle (MCC). The train has no driver; an operator in a dispatch center remotely controls it and can monitor up to four trains simultaneously. The system is fully domestically developed.

This level allows the train to run without a driver. The operation is remotely controlled by an operator from a dispatch center, and one employee can simultaneously monitor up to four trains and, if necessary, apply brakes, control doors, or the climate system. According to Sergey Kudryashov, deputy general director of the St. Petersburg branch of NIIAS, the driverless train control system is fully domestic. Since August 2024, a driverless Lastochka with a third level of automation has also been running on the MCC, with a driver present to monitor the trip.
