Meta unveils Muse Glimmer as Zuckerberg lays out his AI 'philosophy'

Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), Meta's AI division led by Alexandr Wang, released Muse Glimmer on August 10, 2026, following Muse Code earlier in the month. Muse Glimmer is an open-weight model optimized for 'always-on' agent workflows and runs on a single consumer GPU with under 20 GB of weights after 4-bit quantization. It was trained via distillation from Muse Spark, then intermediate training on long-context data and agentic reasoning traces, followed by supervised and reinforcement learning. Meta claims Glimmer outperforms comparable models like Gemma4-31B and Qwen3.6-27B on agent benchmarks. Zuckerberg also announced that weights for Muse Spark 1.2 would be released soon. In a manifesto titled 'The Future is for Everyone,' he argued that superintelligence should be distributed widely rather than concentrated, outlining three pillars: individual empowerment, invention as AI's main purpose, and balance of powers for safety. He promised personal agents with private modes where Meta has no access, dismissed fears of mass job destruction, and downplayed risks, advocating for sharing defensive capabilities broadly and intermediate model versions with the US government. Zuckerberg criticized competitors for aligning models with corporate 'dogmas,' while Anthropic keeps Claude proprietary for safety, and Chinese labs increasingly adopt open weights with caution. Meta positions itself as the American champion of open AI distribution.
