Mark Zuckerberg predicts billions will have personal AI agents in five years

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors on the quarterly earnings call that within five years, billions of people will have personal AI agents that understand their goals and work on their behalf 24/7, assisting with finances, health, interpersonal relationships, and household management. He emphasized that WhatsApp and other messaging surfaces will become increasingly important as people interact with multiple agents. Meta is not alone in betting on agentic AI; Google highlighted custom AI agents in its Search overhaul, and Anthropic's Claude has seen skyrocketing subscriptions due to its Claude Code assistant. However, Meta faces investor skepticism as its stock dropped nearly 10% after the earnings report. Reality Labs, responsible for AR/VR products, lost about $4.6 billion this quarter, contributing to a cumulative loss of around $88 billion since 2021. Meta's free cash flow fell 91% year over year to $784 million, partly due to heavy AI infrastructure investments, including a joint $14 billion data center project with BlackRock in Texas. Zuckerberg believes the personal agents Meta is developing will form the foundation for future products and revenue lines. So far, over one million businesses have adopted Meta's business agents on WhatsApp and Messenger, but consumer adoption will be crucial to reaching billions.
