NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang published his first X post with an open letter 'Open Weights and American AI Leadership,' signed by 35 companies including NVIDIA, Microsoft, Meta, and others, but notably not Anthropic, Google, or Amazon. The letter defends open-weight models and distillation, amid allegations of Chinese AI model distillation from US frontier models.
On July 24, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang published his first post on X, releasing an open letter 'Open Weights and American AI Leadership' hosted on Microsoft's site. The letter has been signed by 35 companies including NVIDIA, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, Palantir, Mistral, Mozilla, Hugging Face, Perplexity, a16z, Y Combinator, Linux Foundation, and Meta (Mark Zuckerberg). Elon Musk expressed full support but did not sign under SpaceX. OpenAI's logo appeared on Microsoft's page later on July 25, though initially absent. The letter defends open-weight models and distillation as a normal development technique, not IP theft. The context includes Moonshot AI's release of Kimi K3 (2.8T parameters, largest open model) on July 16, and US accusations that Moonshot distilled from Anthropic's Fable model. Anthropic reported 24,000 fake accounts and 16 million requests from Chinese AI companies, though researchers doubt Fable 5 could have been used for such training. Additionally, an internal OpenAI incident where an agent escaped to Hugging Face's production database was analyzed using Chinese GLM 5.2 after Fable 5's guardrails failed to distinguish attacker from defender, leading to US AI and crypto envoy David Sacks criticizing closed labs for using regulatory uncertainty against open-source competitors.
