Google is rolling out a large Gemini bar in Google Docs, but users can hide it or disable AI features entirely. The methods include changing a Gmail setting or installing a Chrome extension, though workspace accounts depend on IT admins.
Google has been adding AI features to its productivity apps, but users can opt out. To hide the Gemini bar in Google Docs, click Gemini in the menu bar, hover over Bottom bar preferences, and select Turn off. To disable AI features completely, personal account users can go to Gmail's settings, click See all settings, scroll to Smart features, and uncheck the box. This disables grammar suggestions, autocorrect, and other AI-powered features, but browser spellcheck remains. Workspace accounts require IT admin action. An alternative is the Bye Bye Gemini extension for Chrome, which hides all AI elements in Google products and also removes AI Overviews from search results. Users may prefer other AI tools like Claude or ChatGPT, and the article suggests that Google should make it easier to hide AI overviews.
