Google Registers Gemini Trademark in Russia, But That Doesn't Mean the AI Bot Is Coming

Google has managed to challenge Rospatent's refusal to register the Gemini trademark in Russia, succeeding in one category, with three more categories pending, as reported by RBC. Google submitted the trademark application in August 2024, using the Gemini brand for all its artificial intelligence products. The company applied for registration in four categories: two Russian (classes 9 and 42) and two international under the Madrid System. Initially, Rospatent refused all four applications, but Google contested the refusal for class 42, arguing differences from a similar trademark owned by Czech banking platform developer Finshape Czechia s.r.o. Google obtained written consent from the Czech company, which also confirmed registration in other countries. Rospatent found phonetic and semantic similarities between the marks but also visual differences, and since the marks are not collective or well-known, it satisfied Google's objection and decided to register the Google Gemini trademark in Russia.
