Google will allow users to toggle off visible watermarks on content generated with Gemini and its AI video generator Flow. The update removes the 'sparkle' watermark from images, videos, and music, while invisible SynthID and C2PA watermarks remain embedded.
Google is updating its AI tools to give users the option to turn off visible watermarks on images, videos, and music created with AI. Users can disable a new 'Media watermark' setting in Gemini and Flow, which removes the sparkle logo from the bottom-right corner of content generated by the Nano Banana and Omni models. However, Google will still embed invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata, allowing AI-generated content to be verified through Gemini or Search. Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, Gemini, and AI Studio, confirmed that even without visible markers, the content carries these invisible signals. This change aligns with industry trends, as OpenAI and Meta also avoid visible watermarks, relying on other methods like SynthID, C2PA, and Meta's Content Seal standard. Anthropic also announced it is adding invisible watermarks to AI-generated text and images. Google plans to extend the watermark-setting toggle to Search, but it will not be available in countries where visible watermarks are legally required.
