Google announced during its Q2 2026 earnings call that its AI assistant Gemini now has over 950 million monthly active users, tripling from last year. The milestone puts Gemini in closer competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly users in June.
Google revealed during its Q2 2026 earnings call that Gemini, its AI assistant, now has over 950 million monthly active users, tripling from the previous year. In February, the Gemini app had crossed 750 million monthly active users. CEO Sundar Pichai attributed growth to new agentic features like Daily Brief and the personalized agent Gemini Spark, which launched in the U.S. and internationally. The Gemini app has also gained strong iOS adoption, with over 137 million downloads in the last 12 months, aided by features like the Nano Banana image generation model. According to Sensor Tower's 'State of AI' report for H1 2026, ChatGPT's market share among AI assistants fell below 50% for the first time, while Gemini's share rose to 27.7%. Google also noted that its AI mode, a Q&A-style search feature, crossed 1 billion users and is driving incremental increases in search queries, with hardware engineering reducing costs.
