Google DeepMind Allocates $40 Million to Genesis Mission to Accelerate Scientific Discovery

Google DeepMind and Google Cloud are allocating $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits to support the Genesis Mission, a US national program aimed at doubling the pace of scientific discoveries over a decade. The funds will provide researchers with access to AI tools for science, including AlphaEvolve, AlphaFold 3, AlphaGenome, WeatherNext, and AlphaEarth Foundations, as well as the Gemini for Government platform for employees of US Department of Energy national laboratories.
Google DeepMind (GDM) is expanding support for the Genesis Mission initiative, announced in December 2024, by allocating $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits. The funds are intended for laureates of the Genesis Mission program from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Researchers will gain access to GDM's portfolio of AI tools, including AlphaEvolve (an agent for coding and discovery), AlphaFold 3 (protein structure prediction), AlphaGenome (analysis of DNA variations), WeatherNext (weather forecasting), and AlphaEarth Foundations (planetary modeling). Additionally, tens of thousands of DOE National Labs employees will be provided with seats and Gemini for Government tokens for one year. Use cases already exist: at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), AlphaEvolve helps automate the study of complex mathematical systems, while at the National Laboratory of Rocky Mountains (NLR), Gemini is used for autonomous control of laboratory equipment, reducing microscope calibration time from 90 to 13 minutes.
