Google Chrome to Require Up to 20 GB of Disk Space for Local AI Models

Google has updated its help documentation for the Chrome browser, adding technical requirements for downloading AI models locally. According to the update, users need about 20 GB of free disk space and sufficient device performance. The documentation, revealed by Windows Report on August 1, includes sections on local AI requirements, model download conditions, multi-user usage, and corporate environment specifics. Google clarified that local AI features are not available on all devices, and models download only when compatible hardware is present. Additional criteria include a stable network connection and adequate performance, with these criteria subject to change over time. Google recommends using the built-in On-device AI tools in Chrome settings and advises against manually deleting model files. Disabling On-device AI removes downloaded models and deactivates related settings, while re-enabling triggers a new compatibility check. In corporate environments, management can be handled via Chrome Enterprise policies. The updated guidance follows months after background downloads of Gemini Nano (around 4 GB) raised concerns about storage and bandwidth usage.
