Forward-Deployed Engineers Become the AI Industry's Most Sought-After Talent

A study by Christian & Timbers, shared exclusively with TechCrunch, estimates that only about 2,000 engineers in the US have the combination of sector know-how and AI experience to consistently help enterprises see a return on AI spending. Demand for forward-deployed engineers (FDEs), who work within client organizations to implement AI, is rising rapidly and projected to surge 2,100% by the end of the year. The research, based on interviews with 250+ executives and 300+ FDEs, found that at the start of the year only 5–10% of companies planned to hire FDEs, but by Q2 that jumped to 70%. Palantir invented the FDE concept and still employs many; some clients buy Palantir's technology just to access their FDEs. Frontier AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic have set up their own FDE-focused ventures (Ode with Anthropic and OpenAI's Deployment Company) to help deploy their technology into enterprises. However, enterprises are also hiring internal FDE teams to protect proprietary processes from AI firms. Jeff Christian of C&T warns that in two years, the role might become automated by AI agents, and within five to ten years, FDEs could 'go away'. In the medium term, need may shift from enterprise AI to physical AI for implementing humanoid robots.
