Engineers to Entrust Security of Future Lunar Base to Biomimetic Robots

Chinese engineers have developed a concept for using quadrupedal autonomous AI systems to patrol the territory of the future International Lunar Research Station and reduce psychological pressure on crew members. The robots will handle dangerous and routine operations, including monitoring, sample collection, ice prospecting, module construction, and serving as intelligent companions.
Engineers from the Chinese Academy of Space Technology have revealed details of a large-scale plan to automate future extraterrestrial facilities. According to the approved space program, the first taikonauts are scheduled to land on the Moon by 2030, and a base configuration of a permanent complex intended for long-term stays by international researchers should be deployed near the south pole by 2035. Specialized robot dogs will play a key role in the construction and security of this outpost. The autonomous devices will perform the most dangerous and routine operations on the lunar surface, including continuous territory monitoring to identify radiation and landscape threats, collecting geological samples, and prospecting for water ice deposits. Collected raw materials are planned to be used on site to produce drinking water, technical oxygen, and rocket fuel components. The biomimetic machines will also be tasked with constructing sealed living modules inside lava tubes and on open ground using 3D printing technologies from local regolith. In addition to utilitarian construction and security functions, the robots will act as intelligent companions; developers have integrated speech recognition and dialogue algorithms to reduce chronic stress and prevent emotional burnout among specialists in extreme isolation from Earth. The main technical barriers remain the absence of navigation infrastructure on the Moon and a lack of real data arrays for training neural networks, forcing the algorithms to operate in full autonomy without the right to error.
