A CNBC report, based on House disbursement records, reveals that OpenAI's ChatGPT is the preferred AI tool in Congress by spending. During the year ending March 31, House offices, committees, and institutional accounts spent about $100,580 across 798 transactions on ChatGPT, which is roughly 90% of the $113,740 total AI spending. Anthropic's Claude was the second most popular, with $13,160 spent across 37 transactions. Democratic offices outspent Republicans, with $54,165 in AI purchases versus $15,782. The figures exclude AI usage from free accounts or AI bundled in broader software contracts. Congressional staffers use ChatGPT and other tools for tasks such as writing memos, summarizing and analyzing legislation, responding to constituents, preparing hearing materials, sorting policy research, and drafting social media posts.
