ChatGPT Has No More Limits in Its Free Version: You Can Chat with It Unlimited
OpenAI
OpenAI announced on August 6, 2026, that from next week, unlimited text conversations will be available to free ChatGPT users, marking a first for the service with a billion weekly users. The default model will be GPT-5.6 Luna, a smaller model, while the more powerful GPT-5.6 Sol remains reserved for paid subscriptions. This change undermines the value of the budget ChatGPT Go subscription.
OpenAI has announced a major change to its flagship service, ChatGPT, making text conversations unlimited for all free users starting next week, a first for the service which now claims a billion weekly users. The unlimited access will be powered by GPT-5.6 Luna, the smallest model and new default for ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Go, optimized for quick daily responses, while the more powerful GPT-5.6 Sol remains exclusive to paid tiers and is suited for complex tasks like code, research, and reasoning. By default, GPT-5.6 Luna does not reason, but a 'Think' button and a new slider will allow users to increase its reasoning level. The unlimited access applies only to text chats; image generation, file uploads, and other tools will still have quotas, and restrictions may be applied to prevent abuse. The policy change weakens the appeal of the €8-per-month ChatGPT Go subscription, which previously offered more chats but not the best models, though it still provides higher limits for other features. OpenAI also announced improvements to GPT-5.6 Sol in code, research, science, cybersecurity, and autonomous computer use.
