Anthropic does not intend to oppose open AI models, Dario Amodei assured

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei clarified that his company never supported banning open-weight AI models, countering a wave of criticism that Anthropic seeks excessive control over AI's future. A coalition including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and Palantir published an open letter urging authorities to avoid premature bans on open models, which currently dominate via Chinese startups. Anthropic backed the letter, while OpenAI abstained. Amodei proposed focusing on preventing powerful chips from reaching authoritarian regimes, halting large-scale distillation, and requiring safety tests for all capable models, both open and closed. He agreed that targeted legal and commercial mechanisms could address distillation risks, and acknowledged that open models offer users more control and expand AI access, but rejected the notion that they are inherently better for cybersecurity. Amodei concluded he does not support protectionist bans, as they do not solve core national security issues.
