Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's special projects lead and former COO, announced his departure after eight years, saying he will start 'something new.' His exit is part of a series of executive changes at the company, including the recent departures of AGI chief Fidji Simo and CMO Kate Rouch.
Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's special projects lead and former COO, is departing after eight years at the AI lab, as announced in an internal memo he posted to X. Lightcap said he has been focused on the next horizon and is excited to help advance the mission from a different vantage point, adding he will remain for the next few weeks. His role had evolved significantly over the past year and a half: in March 2025, his COO role expanded to oversee business and day-to-day operations; in January 2026, he stepped back from leading enterprise product and engineering but stayed in charge of commercial functions; and in April, he officially stepped down as COO to lead special projects, reporting to CEO Sam Altman. Denise Dresser, the company's CRO, took over a significant portion of his former role. Lightcap's departure follows other high-profile exits: AGI chief Fidji Simo left in July after medical leave, and CMO Kate Rouch stepped down in April for health reasons. The company is also reorganizing its C-suite, with president Greg Brockman taking control of the product side, as it prepares to go public over the coming year.
