AMD acquires Canadian AI inference chip startup Taalas

AMD has announced its intention to acquire Taalas, a Canadian AI startup developing specialized chips for accelerating inference workloads. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Taalas binds specific AI models to its chips at the hardware level, achieving higher computational efficiency than existing alternatives. AMD stated that Taalas' developments will be included in its server solutions, which is a strategic move as the company shifts focus to inference and allocates AI segment profits to such deals. Taalas focuses on creating low-cost chips optimized for specific AI models, claiming performance thousands of times superior to general-purpose GPUs. Before the deal, Taalas optimized its chips for Meta's Llama 3.1 model. Its chips are manufactured by TSMC and feature integrated high-speed SRAM memory. Taalas promises to implement any new AI model in hardware within two months. AMD believes that universal GPUs will continue to dominate the AI market due to their versatility.
