AI triggers memory shortages; Apacer CEO warns of worsening deficit by 2027

Rising demand from the AI industry is increasing memory prices and causing supply constraints. Apacer's CEO predicts memory shortage will last through 2026 and that output could fall 30% below current levels by 2027.
The rapid growth of the AI industry has significantly increased prices for RAM and SSDs, with further rises expected next year. Apacer CEO C.K. Chang stated that memory shortages will likely persist throughout 2026 and that supply assurance is now a greater operational risk than high costs. He expects memory makers to produce about 30% of current year volumes in 2027. Apacer is building inventory, reaching $383 million in memory stock by the end of the first half of 2026. Many consumer electronics manufacturers are signing multi-year contracts to hedge against shortages. Phison's CEO predicted that many such firms will go bankrupt or cease production by year-end. According to DigiTimes, about 60% of DRAM production capacity is now dedicated to server applications, and DDR5 RDIMM modules have seen the largest price increases, likely continuing.
