Rippling introduced AI Spend Console to help companies monitor and limit AI costs, after its own AI token spend spiked to 40% of R&D headcount budget. The tool maps individual spending and productivity, and has cut its token costs to 15% of headcount budget while maintaining usage.
Rippling unveiled AI Spend Console, a product that helps companies track and control AI spending, mapping how much individual employees, teams, and roles spend and whether they are genuinely more productive. The tool was born after Rippling discovered in March that it was on track to burn 40% of its R&D headcount budget on AI tokens, with spending growing 80% month-over-month, and one engineer spending $50,000 a month. Rippling built its own AI gateway to route prompts to the most cost-effective models, and negotiated spending caps with Cursor, OpenAI, and Anthropic. After using the tool, Rippling dropped token spend to about 15% of headcount budget, while July's token usage was similar to April's but cost 37% as much. The product includes dashboards that score attributes like prompts per day, work output, and spend, and is available to Rippling's HR subscribers or as a standalone product.
